Timing Is Everything
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:21:23 AM »
My favorite of all your postings so far RE. Meeting your grandparents was wonderful and certainly explains how you happened to become a famous gunfighter Mr Paladin. Grandpa's bar{The original DD Diner?}, sure seemed liked it was a most interesting place to have a shot and drink some suds. On a more serious note, studying that picture of the sign keep moving with those poor hungry souls walking past, all with their heads tilted towards the ground was heart breaking. Imagine walking twenty miles on an empty belly looking for work and coming upon that greeting? We cannot go through that again now, the fabric and character of the citizenry has changed too much. It will be a far uglier, violent and destructive episode the next time it happens. GO

And never forget that the "greeting" was courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, a more retrograde and hostile-to-the-interests-of-working-people group has never been identified.

When Robespierre goes Stalin, the list begins with local C of C types.

Thanks GO.

I think we may underestimate the amount of violence during that period, but I also agree that this go round is likely to be worse.  The expanded population size alone will make it worse.  Its also just really hard to imagine how Big Shitties like NY and Chicago will make it through extended Blackouts.

It does look like we will be able to see Coming Attractions appearing over in Europe in the near future.  One suspects a long and hot summer ahead out in the streets.

"No rebuild of industrialized society, just further destruction until enough are dead so there are enough local resources for the survivors. It would be at this point you could attempt a rebuild on 1850s era technology, utilizing mostly Coal and scavenging parts from the Age of Oil. Call that a 50 year timeline, then another 100 years perhaps rebuilding with that technology until it also gives up the ghost.1750s after that for another couple of centuries, back to the Stone Age after that."

RE, I too believe in a retrograde reset in the level of civilization over the coming years.  I believe the gears will catch at a level somewhere between the 1850's and the 1930's.  I base this on the sheer amount of knowledge that has accumulated since the last depression.  While I agree that society as a whole may not hold together as well as it did in the 1930's, there will probably be local pockets of civilization that will be able to capitalise on the wealth of knowledge to be had.  All the cycle work I have seen indicates that the coming period will be a major correction, not the end of days itself.  I have hope and reasons to believe that Armageddon is still a long way off...

Speaking of Chicago, and to reprise an RE meme, "Coming to a Theatre near You..."

Milwaukee Red Cross Told To Prep For Chicago Evacuation During NATO Summit

CHICAGO (CBS) – Is there a secret plan to evacuate some residents of Chicago in the event of major trouble during the NATO summit next month? CBS 2 has uncovered some evidence that there is. It comes from the Milwaukee area branch of the American Red Cross.

CBS 2 News has obtained a copy of a Red Cross e-mail sent to volunteers in the Milwaukee area.

It said the NATO summit “may create unrest or another national security incident. The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin has been asked to place a number of shelters on standby in the event of evacuation of Chicago.”

According to a chapter spokesperson, the evacuation plan is not theirs alone.

“Our direction has come from the City of Chicago and the Secret Service,” she said.

Officials at Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication said the directive did not come from them.

The U.S. Secret Service did not return calls for comment.

Some downtown residents told CBS 2’s Mike Parker that the news has them on edge.

Brad Klein said it is “very unnerving. I feel a little bit unsafe, just a bit more than a little bit. It doesn’t make me feel like I want to be in the city during the NATO conference.”

An executive with the Service Employees International Union, who trains members in preparation for the summit, thinks such a plan might be “over the top.”

SEIU Local 1 training director Tom Dobry said, “This could be a lot like Y2K – a lot of hype and buildup. People will say, ‘that was it?’ Not a big deal.”
